IKEA is on a transformation journey with the aim of combining our home furnishing knowledge with digital capabilities. The focus in our digitalization of product content is to enable effective planning, creation and distribution of impactful content across all channels and markets, all while enabling collaboration with partners and external parties across the globe.
To enable our transformation, we’re on the lookout for Software Engineers that understand the software development principles, have the programming language skills, and can implement digital solutions that will realize this journey of Omnichannel content. Here’s your chance to really make a difference!
Role
As a Software Engineer, you will collaborate closely with colleagues in a cross-functional Agile team — including Software Engineers, Data Scientists, and Solution Architects — to design and develop cloud-based products that address business needs defined by the Digital Product Lead.
You will be part of building and evolving a global application that uses AI and data from multiple IKEA sources to enrich content with meaningful metadata. By combining technology and intelligence, you’ll help create solutions that enable IKEA and retailers to present and manage product information more accurately, consistently, and sustainably across all channels.
This is a unique opportunity to work on AI-powered, data-rich systems that have a tangible global impact — improving how millions of customers experience IKEA every day.
About You
You see both the big picture and the finer details. You believe in teamwork and focus on outcomes over output. You’re self-motivated, curious, and comfortable exploring new technologies — from backend systems to AI and data-driven applications. Most importantly, you’re a humble team player who enjoys turning ideas into real, impactful solutions.
Technical Environment
We’re looking for someone who enjoys solving problems end to end — from backend logic to frontend interfaces — and who’s happy to learn along the way. You don’t need to know everything on day one; what matters most is curiosity, collaboration, and the ability to take ownership of your work.
You’ll be working with technologies like:
- Python 3.10+ – We build object-oriented applications using modern Python. If you write clean, structured code and like improving how things are done, you’ll feel at home.
- FastAPI – Our main framework for developing APIs. Experience with any REST-based framework is welcome — we’ll help you get comfortable with ours.
- Frontend development – While the role leans backend, we’re looking for someone who’s comfortable implementing frontend features as well. You don’t need to be a design expert — you’ll collaborate with our partner agency (Range Rodeo) — but you should be able to build functional, user-friendly interfaces with guidance.
- Azure – We run our services in the cloud. Experience with Azure is great, but knowledge from any cloud platform will translate well.
- Terraform and GitHub Actions – We use these for deployments and automation. If you’ve worked with infrastructure-as-code or want to grow that skill, there’s room to do so here.
- Testing – We value testing and continuous improvement. You don’t need to be a testing specialist — just someone who cares about quality and learning how to measure impact.
- SSO, permissions, and access control – You’ll work with these security areas, and we’ll help you learn what’s needed to do this effectively.
- AI and data-driven applications – Experience is a plus, but at minimum a curiosity and willingness to work with AI-powered systems is required.
Recruitment process
Call with a Recruiter – An informal conversation to explore whether the role, the company, and IKEA values are a good fit for both sides.
Meet your Hiring Manager – A deeper discussion about your background and experience.
Technical Assignment – Complete a coding exercise to showcase your skills.
Technical Interview – Review your solution and discuss hands-on examples with a couple of our Engineers.
Meet your Grandparent – A grandparent is the manager of the hiring manager. Supportive and full of knowledge, helping you get a good start with a broader perspective on the role you applied for.
References – Provide contacts who can speak to your skills and experience.
