With us, you can feel at home at work while sharing that feeling with millions of people around the world. We encourage you to stand up for yourself and others, creating an environment where everyone feels welcome. We invite you to open new doors, embrace mistakes, and grow from them. As our Master thesis student, you’ll have many opportunities to try things you’ve never done before.
We are now looking for a student who wants to write their Master thesis at IKEA of Sweden from mid-January to June 2026. Your key assignment is to develop a methodology to test and simulate humidity effect on wood-based materials.
Your new assignment
IKEA has committed to making life at home for our customers easy, by offering home furnishing products and accessories at a price many can afford. We do this by sticking to our well tried, tested and proven ‘Democratic Design Principles’. The five dimensions of Democratic Design are sustainability, quality, low price, form and function: none of which are negotiable.
Having IKEA stores all around the globe comes with the challenge that all our products should withstand a wide range of climatic conditions, from cold and dry to hot and humid.
We invite you to explore with us the future (improved) way of working with different types of engineered wood and develop methodology to address how to test and/or simulate effects of humidity on our furniture made from engineered wood. The work involves varied tasks like extensive testing in a climate chamber, measurement using state of the art digital image correlation system and develop a simulation model by using measured data.
The deliverables are:
- Develop simulation material model for humidity to be used in Finite Element Analysis.
- Arrange and present the test data, from DOE’s in order to make meaningful conclusions.
- An end report written in English.
- What we’d like you to bring to the table
- We think that you:
- Have a background in mechanical engineering
- Are curious and courageous to try new things
- Have strong skills in quantitative analysis and enjoy working with large data
- Enjoy working in an international and multi-disciplinary team
- Are fluent in English
